The Acerola (Malpighia glabra L.) is a shrubby, climbing plant native to tropical and subtropical areas of America, which can reach up to 5 metres in height. The fruits, drupes with a diameter of one to two centimetres, look very similar to cherries, which is why the acerola is also known as the Barbados or Brazilian cherry. Inside, the fruit is divided into segments with a slightly sour flavour, reminiscent of oranges.

The main reason for Acerola's fame is the very high percentage of ascorbic acid (vitamin C) contained in its fruit, making it known as one of the richest natural sources of vitamin C.
